«Shape of You» is a song performed by British singer-songwriter and guitarist Ed Sheeran. It was released for digital download on January 5, 2017 as a lead double single from his third studio album ÷ (2017), alongside «Castle on the Hill».
The dancehall-infused pop song was written by Sheeran, Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid. Additional writing credits were given to Kandi Burruss, Tameka «Tiny» Cottle, and Kevin Briggs after the song’s initial release due to notable similarities to the TLC tune «No Scrubs». The song was produced by Sheeran and Mac.
«Shape of You» peaked at number one on the singles charts in 34 countries, including the Billboard Hot 100, as well as on the UK, Australian, and Canadian singles charts. It stayed at number one for a record 16 consecutive weeks on the Canadian Hot 100, as well as 14 non-consecutive weeks on the UK Singles Chart,4 and 12 non-consecutive weeks on the US Hot 100. The song won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 60th annual Grammy Awards. Billboard ranked it the ninth most successful song of all time, as the magazine celebrated the Hot 100’s 60th anniversary.
The song was the last one written for Sheeran’s third album, ÷.11 On January 5, 2017, when he performed on The Radio 1 Breakfast Show, he revealed that it had originally been written with Rihanna in mind. As he had already composed all the songs he wanted for the album, it was not meant to be included on the album. It was conceived as a duet between Rihanna and Rudimental, but the head of the record label convinced him to keep the song. He commented, «Hey bro, wanna go a round with me?»
